What is the function of puller?

Pullers are mainly used to remove gear sets (usually are bearings with cones or balls) from a rotating machine shaft. The puller is usually manual, and it can be easily removed by rotating the handle of the puller, applying pressure to the screw, and turning it. Using a puller to remove the parts installed on the shaft can save time and make the process simple. Depending on the application, the puller also has different sizes. Therefore, we need to determine the size of the puller according to the size and space of the part. In a narrow space, we can use two jaw pullers.

Pullers are often used in maintenance work that requires rotating parts, such as the automobile repair industry, mechanical installation, heavy industry, and heavy lifting work, etc., mainly used to remove gears, pulleys, sprockets, bushes, wheels, and other round shape components.

Main components of puller

The components of the puller include the hexagonal head, forcing screw, cross arms, and reversible claw legs.

  1. Hexagonal head– It is mainly connected with forced screws and can be easily loosened and locked by using a socket wrench.

  2. Forcing screw – The forcing screw normally is rotated corresponding to the shaft. When we apply a force on the screw, this force will be transmitted to the part to be disassembled.

  3. Cross arms – Cross arm normally is used to fix the cross legs to the forcing screws.

  4. Reversible claw legs – The reversible claw legs can accept the internal and external pulls.

What are the main types of puller?

There are different general types of pullers in this market. According to different applications, we can choose different pullers to make the work more efficient. Next, we will discuss the characteristics and uses of different types of pullers.

Two Jaw and Three Jaw Pullers

The puller is usually a tool to remove the damaged bearing from the shaft. The 2-jaw puller and the 3-jaw puller are the most commonly used pullers. Among them, because the 3-jaw puller has a structural design of three claw legs, the puller can distribute the force more evenly, so it is the most popular in the mechanical maintenance industry. The structure of the 3-jaw puller is composed of a pull claw, a screw rod, and a rotary handle. The claw legs of the 3-jaw puller have internal and external hooks, which are suitable for dismantling difficult-to-dismantle components such as pulleys and gears. When using a 3-jaw puller, we need to position the top of the screw rod at the top of the shaft end, and make its pull claw hook on the external of the bearing, and then rotate the handle to make the bearing rotate and move outward, so far we can dismantle the spare parts. If in a relatively narrow or space-restricted environment, we can use a 2-jaw puller to dismantle the spare parts. The usage method of the 2-jaw puller is the same as the 3-jaw puller.

Hydraulic Pullers

The hydraulic puller has a hydraulic cylinder inside, which is mainly powered by a pump to apply the required force. The hydraulic puller is mainly used to start the rod hydraulically so that the rod can move forward, so if we just push the rod alone, the rod will not rotate. The hydraulic puller is small in size and easy to carry. The operation is very convenient, safe, not restricted by the environment, and very labor-saving. Only a small swing is needed to move the hydraulic start lever, and the claw moves backward to pull the parts out. Hydraulic puller is suitable for the maintenance industry, shipbuilding industry, and machinery factory, etc.

When choosing a hydraulic puller, we must first ensure the force required to pull out the parts to avoid damage caused by being overweight. Besides, we must also ensure that the hydraulic oil is clean, and it is better to use anti-wear hydraulic oil. To use the hydraulic puller, we must tighten the oil return valve stem in a clockwise direction at first, and then adjust the claw seat so that the hook can hook the part to be pulled. Flip the piston back and forth continuously to move the rod forward. At this time, the claw hook will move backward and the parts can be pulled out.

Internal Pullers

We can hold the bearing tightly by using the internal puller and quickly pull out the external parts from the inside. The internal puller has a sliding hammer with a shaft, which can apply impact and bearings. An internal puller is a tool for disassembling parts without spindle support.

According to the above article, the puller is mainly a disassembly tool to separate the bearing and the shaft. By rotating the top rod of the puller, the bearing can be easily taken out.
