Sealant

In industry, silicone is a kind of sealant and adhesive, which has the characteristics of heat insulation, electrical insulation, temperature difference, and moisture resistance. Most people use it to seal materials. The more common types of sealants include acrylic, silicone, epoxy, polyethylene, MS polymer sealant, and so on. However, today we are going to discuss some common types of these sealants.

Silicone Sealant

Silicone sealant is one of the sealants. The main raw material of silicone sealant is polydimethylsiloxane, and it is also mixed with fillers, coupling agents, crosslinking agents, plasticizers, catalysts, and other elements. Its form is paste-like, once it comes into contact with moisture in the air, it will solidify into hard and elastic silicone rubber. Since the silicone sealant will not flow after use, it can be used in the joint project of overhead or sidewalls, and there is no need to worry about sag or collapse.

Since silicone sealant has an extremely high resistance to weather, temperature, water and chemicals, it can be used indoors and outdoors. Especially when dealing with home maintenance and repairs. Silicone sealant is widely used for bonding building materials because of its strong stretching ability and adhesion. Besides, it is also waterproof, shock-resistant, and weather-resistant, so it is very suitable for use in places with large changes in cold and heat.

Acrylic Sealant

The acrylic sealant is a kind of acrylic polymer, which is a mixture of methacrylic monomers, acrylate copolymers, benzoin propyl ether, α-methyl styrene oligomers, and activators. It has good fluidity in a relatively wide temperature, and it has good weather resistance when it is cured. The various materials are mixed according to the formula ratio, and then heated and stirred evenly, so that the sealant can be obtained. It is mainly suitable for sealing and filling metal or plastic, and it is also suitable to be used as a material for interior and exterior decoration.

Compared with silicone sealants, acrylic sealants are able to paint and therefore suitable for most coatings. However, silicone sealants are more flexible than acrylic sealants and have a longer service life. Besides, silicone sealants are more suitable for processing. When the sealant is cured, the weather resistance of the acrylic sealant cannot be compared with that of the silicone sealant.

Epoxy Sealant

The epoxy sealant can play the role of protection and isolation. It has strong adhesion, low shrinkage, good media resistance, and good manufacturability. The above advantages make it have good adhesion on materials such as metal, glass, plastic, and ceramics. It is also suitable for use on concrete surfaces and can be used as a long-term wear-resistant protective film on the surface. But it is only suitable for indoor use because if it is exposed to the sun for a long time, it will easily turn yellow. Because it is shiny and transparent, it can be used in interior decoration floors to make the design look good and protect the floor from abrasion.

Polyurethane Sealant

Polyurethane is an organic material. According to our needs, polyurethane sealant can easily change its hardness, adhesive strength, and flexibility. Under the action of ultraviolet rays, the polyurethane sealant will begin to return to its original polymer form after exposure to the sun for a long period. It has two functions, which can be used for sealing and bonding respectively. As a sealing purpose, it can be used as the joint between building components, the joint of the rainwater collection pipe on the roof, and the rain gutter. For bonding purposes, some sealants have high surface adhesion and low flexibility. It is especially suitable for sealing on metal structures such as the automobile manufacturing industry and the glass repair industry.

MS Polymer Adhesive

MS polymer adhesive is a highly elastic, high-strength adhesive. It can show its strong adhesion even when used on non-porous surfaces. Besides, it can also be used on wet surfaces. Its high elasticity, high strength joint is very resistant to cracking. It is also suitable for bonding common building materials, and for sealing joints around sanitary equipment, glass systems, and weatherproof joints around doors and windows.

Above we have listed some of the more common sealants. According to different environmental requirements and applied materials, the selected sealants are different.
