Main Scaffolding Types and Their Uses in Construction

Scaffolding is mainly a temporary work platform built to ensure that the construction process can proceed smoothly. Scaffolding is usually used in higher work locations, such as building maintenance, cleaning work, and mechanical engineering work, which greatly improves the work efficiency of employees and supports their work at heights. Most are made of steel or wood. Scaffolding has different types and heights. Depending on the type of project, the scaffolding used is also different. The standard length of scaffolding is 5 feet and 7 feet. It is usually 5 feet high and can reach a height of 30 feet.

According to the structure of scaffolding, it can be divided into single scaffolding, double scaffolding, cantilever scaffolding, suspended scaffolding, trestle scaffolding, steel scaffolding, and patented scaffolding.

Types of Scaffolding

1. Cantilever scaffolding

Cantilever scaffolding is a horizontal working platform, which is often used in situations where the scaffold is erected on the ground, such as in a narrow space or when there are obstructions on the ground. Cantilever scaffolding does not require any electric poles and frames to be erected in front of the structure of the building.

2. Single scaffolding

Single scaffolding refers to scaffolding with only one row of rods and is generally used for protection. Usually close to one side of the wall. One end of the ledger is supported in a hole in the wall, and the other end is supported on a vertical rod. Generally used for bricklaying, interior wall plastering, painting, and other projects that do not require load-bearing. Single scaffolding needs to support the pole against the wall. The distance between the single scaffolding and the wall is about 1.2 meters. When dismantling such single scaffolding, the holes need to be filled with concrete.

3. Double scaffolding

The double scaffolding is mainly perpendicular to the wall of the building, with two vertical rods to bear the weight, and can be supported without any help. This has a protective effect. The row against the wall is about 20 to 30 cm away from the wall, while the other side is about 1 m away from the wall. Double scaffolding is generally used for masonry works and throwing cement bricks.

4. Patented scaffolding

This patented scaffolding is a scaffold that can be purchased in different markets. The patented scaffolding is made of steel. Generally, when using this kind of scaffolding, it needs to be placed on a horizontal bracket, so that these brackets can be adjusted to the height we need.

5. Suspended scaffolding

Suspended scaffolding is adjustable scaffolds, which is a platform suspended at both ends of the platform by ropes or non-rigid cables. Usually used for high-rise building projects, such as cleaning windows of high-rise buildings.

6. Steel scaffolding

Steel scaffolding was mainly made of steel pipes. The links between the steel pipes are fixed and bound together with steel connectors or accessories, which makes it easier to disassemble and install. Steel scaffolding has high strength, high durability, and arson characteristics, so its cost is higher than ordinary scaffolding. But to ensure that employees can work in a more efficient and safe manner. This type of scaffolding is mainly used for large outdoor structures.

7. Trestle scaffolding

Trestle scaffolding is a movable platform, and its bottom is a tripod with wheels that can be moved. Usually, this kind of scaffolding is mainly used for indoor projects, such as interior decoration and mural painting projects.

We’ve listed some of the characteristics of scaffolding’s working conditions in the following:

  1. The load on it has greater variability.

  2. There are initial defects in the structure and components of the scaffold, such as the bending and corrosion of the rods, the error of the erection size, and the eccentricity of the load.

  3. The connection point between the scaffold and the wall has a large constraint variation on the scaffold.

When we use scaffolding, we also need to pay attention to safety when using it.

  1. The materials used to erect the scaffold must be hard and meet quality requirements.

  2. The scaffold should be erected higher than 1.5m above the top of the building or the operating surface, and enclosures should be added beside it to ensure safety.

  3. Try to build scaffolding where the foundation is stable. If you find that the foundation is not level, please use the adjustable base feet to reach the balance. The foundation must be able to withstand the working pressure and the weight of scaffolding.

  4. In the event of severe climate change, please do not set up scaffolding.

  5. Before using scaffolding, it must be strictly inspected by the person in charge of the construction site before it can be used on the construction site. If an abnormal situation is found in the scaffolding during construction, reinforcement measures should be taken immediately.

  6. When we are using scaffolding, we must wear safety belts and protective measures.

  7. When removing the scaffold, check the connection between the scaffold and the building. Clear the debris on the scaffold, and remove it from top to bottom in the order of the first installation and then disassembly, and second installation and removal. The dismantled materials should be delivered to the ground in an orderly manner.

According to different working environments, the scaffolding used is also different. The above describes some of the main types of scaffolding, their characteristics and uses.
