Different Types of Fasteners

Fastener Supplier Malaysia

A fastener is a mechanical device that can join or affix two or more items together rigidly. It can be seen nearly everywhere, in our household appliances, furniture, buildings, machinery, and those requiring assembly will definitely using fastener to affix the items. One type of joints created by the fastener is known as non-permanent joints that can be removed or replaces without creating damages on the joining items. The fastener creates a non-permanent joint normally using together with bolts, screws, washers, nuts, etc. Whereas, a riveted joint and welding joint create a permanent joint for the items. Steel fastener is one of the most popular types of fastener which has been widely used in different industries and applications. It can be made of carbon steel, stainless steel, aluminum, and alloy steel. Generally, a coating or plating such as zinc coating or hot dip galvanizing will be applied on the metal fasteners to improve their mechanical characteristics or enhance the corrosion resistance.

The basis of a fastener is the screw thread. The screw with an external thread is known as the male part, while a hole with an internal thread is known as the female part. We know that fastener has limitless application as it can hold countless items together. Workers use industrial fasteners for all sorts of engineering and construction projects; homeowners also use them for many home DIY projects such as picture hanging, furniture assembly, cabinet installation, etc. A loosen or broken fastener can cause severe consequences and affect the entire system. We need to consider many important factors when choosing the right fasteners for the applications. Factors that should be considered including the material of the items, weight restrictions, environment, installation process, etc. In terms of the fastener itself, we also need to take into account the threading, stiffness of the fastener, and the applied load on the fastener. A correct fastener can reduce the stress concentration and minimize the fatigue of the overall system. There are different types of fasteners available such as screws, nails, bolts, nuts, washers, anchors, and rivets. Each of these different types of fasteners is a category and many types under each category. Here we will summarize some common types of fasteners in Malaysia.

What are the types of Fasteners?

1. Screws

Screw fastener is one of the most popular and versatile types of threaded fastener which joins two or more threaded items. It has threaded shafts which provide a durable holding ability for affixing the items. It has a head on top of the screw which is used when driving the screw into the workpiece/item with the screwdriver. We need to choose the right screwdriver according to the design of the head. For intance, if the screw has a flat head, we will need to use a flat head screwdriver for turning and installing the screw. Common types of screws are Deck Screw, Hex Lag Screw, Countersunk Screw, Machine Screw, Wood Screw, Sheet Metal Screw.

2. Nails

Nail is popular to be used in construction, carpentry, and household items. It has a slender metal shaft body, a pointed end of the nail, and a flattened surface called the head. There is no threading on the nails and it provides lesser holding power than the screw does. However, it has a greater shear strength and suitable to be used for certain applications. It is most popular to fasten items on wood, plastic, or drywall. The nail can be made of stainless steel, copper, bronze, or aluminum for different mechanical characteristics and purposes. Some common types of nails including Box Nails, Common Nails, Finishing Nails, Drywall Nails, Flooring Nails, Roofing Nails, Framing Nails, Brad Nails.

3. Bolts, Nuts, and Washers

Bolt and nut are one of the most common types of fasteners. Unlike screws, the bolt is used to join two or more unthreaded items. The nut has a hexagonal exterior and round-shape interior design with a threaded surface, it connects to the bolt with the interior threaded surface. The hexagonal nut allows us to grip it easily during the installing and removing process. By joining the items, the bolt is inserted through the items, then fasten in place with a nut on the end. Bolt and nut work together to hold the items firmly. A washer is a flat disc with an opening in the middle. A washer is usually added in between the bolt and nut to distribute the load evenly over the surface of the items. 4. Anchors

The anchor is most commonly used in buildings to secure metal to the concrete or other materials such as cement, drywall, stone brick, or polyester resin. Before we install the anchor fasteners, we need to drill a hole in the base item, the hole is bigger than the anchor which allows the anchor to be embedded into a hole in the right manner. The anchor can be installed into hardened concrete or non-hardened concrete. There are two types of anchor fasteners which are the chemical anchor and mechanical anchor fastener. The mechanical anchor is using friction to anchor the item in place. Whereas the chemical anchor is using chemical adhesive to affix the anchor in the hole. When choosing the right anchors, it is critical to consider the material type, weight, size, and directional force of the surface item being anchored. Some common types of anchors fastener are Bonded Anchor, Acoustical Wedge Anchor, Plastic Anchor, Drop-in Anchor, Screw Anchor, Hammer Drive Anchors, Expansion Shield Anchor.

5. Rivets

Rivet provides a durable and permanent joint between two items. It is lightweight, high strength-to-weight ratio, and most commonly used to join metal plates and metal sheets. The rivet has a smooth cylindrical shaft with one head on one end and a tail on another end. A rivet gun will be used for the installation of the rivet. The rivet will be placed into a drilled hole of the items, then the tail is deformed by pounding or smashing on it, to cause the tail to be expanded by about one time of the original diameter of the shaft and able to hold the rivet in place. The most common types of rivets are

Pop Rivet, Blind Rivet, Large Flange Pop Rivet, Drive Rivet, Tri-fold Rivet.
